Feminism in Video Games

This page will discuss the rather recent controversy in video gaming surrounding feminism.

For years, it was the perceived notion that gaming is a male dominated hobby. However, many studies have stated that there are just as many female gamers as males. However, some males in the community have not taken to this well. A lot of outspoken male gamers deny that women should be allowed to be gamers and that female characters should follow the traditional tropes, such as the damsel in distress. In other words, they do not want strong, female game characters and do not want women to game.

One of the biggest issues with Gamergate is the idea that many male gamers are misogynistic and sexist. There is even an infamous person on the internet, Anita Sarkeesian, who has a show called Feminist Frequency, that talks about female tropes in entertainment. She, along with other feminists, as well as normal female gamers, have received numerous threats on the internet and in real life, such as rape and death threats.

However, in reverse order, a lot of extreme feminist activists, which many people have nicknamed, “femi-nazis,” have criticized a lot of normal male gamers and games and try to attack anything they find damaging to their cause.

This is a big and rather delicate topic. There are thousands of different opinions and stances on this issue. There is also a lot that can be said psychologically about the extreme people on each side.

I decided to do a few videos talking to people about this subject. I also decided to break this down into two videos. The first part will focus mainly on how women are others are portrayed in gaming. The second part will be an analysis on why people behave this way towards each other.
