   Sitting in the “Snooker Room” of the International Hotel in Kilarney, Ireland, Point Park’s media group was given some interesting advice on May 19: “Never be shy about being stupid,” from Declan Malone, regional editor of the county newspaper.
    The statement was shocking until Malone explained it. What he meant was, if there’s something you don’t know, be honest. At first Malone seemed a bit nervous and unsure of how to present the material as he went through his history and work experience. One may think not having a background in journalism may hinder him or her from succeeding, but in the case of Malone, it was the complete opposite. Malone went to school for Sociology and Psychology but ended up the editor of The Kerryman, Ireland’s best selling regional newspaper, in Kerry and Cork because he “had nothing else to do” and it was a family business.
    But for someone who didn’t intend to become a journalist, he has certainly changed it into a passion, “the best part is dealing with people. I like when people call to complain and I can send them away happy,” said Malone who described journalism as “tough business, not highly paid, fun for a few years, and if you get hooked you won’t leave.”
    Malone’s hook into the business isn’t the only untraditional characteristic he possesses as he speaks fluent profanity and displays it willingly. However, he still manages to provide advice, experience, and thoughts that inspire, such as “The Internet is an untidy library,” a statement that left his mouth, but stayed in the heads and hearts of our media group.
